By John
Grisham
Reviewed
by Paige Turner:
I
normally review only undull books, books you can't put down -- like this book by
John Grisham, King of Torts --
which is what is often called a "thriller." I realize that dull men do not
like to be thrilled . . .
or perhaps it is that they like to get their thrills from ordinary things, which
brings me to why I think dull men will like this book.
After
reading Grisham's latest, which almost instantly rose to number one on
bestseller lists,
I think there are some things in it that make it suitable for dull men to read.
 |
First
of all, there's the first name of the main character. He is named "Clay." Is
there any name duller than that?
The name evokes dullness . . . isn't what
comes to mind a gray or beige substance
. . . a substance that has no
exciting uses?
|
 |
And
then there's Clay's family name: Carter. What comes to mind? President
Carter?
Not what you'd call an exciting president, right?
|
 |
Clay,
although at one point in his relatively young life, he rises to the highest
of high life styles,
seems to always prefer ordinary things. He opts for ice
tea at champagne and caviar events. He goes to bed early.
He avoids
excitement.

 |
In
the end, without giving away too much, he flies off with a lady to lead
a
much-looked-forward-to ordinary life in a small apartment somewhere in
Europe..
