Pancake Day in Liberal, Kansas and Elsewhere Around the World

Pancake Day is not only a big day a Pancake Race in Olney. It is celebrated throughout the U.K. as well as around the world. As shown on the banner above for International Pancake Day in Liberal, Kansas.

Liberal is twined with Olney. The two towns compete every year for the winner of a joint pancake race. A website, The Unofficial Olney Pancake Page, speaks about the competition. It indicates that Liberal is ahead. As least that was the case as of 2008. The website needs to be updated for 2009 and soon for 2010. In 2008, Amanda Curtis from Liberal ran the race in 66.3 seconds. Armada Brear from Olney in 69.9 seconds.

As for the U.K. I was surprised, and pleased, yesterday to see this little display at the till as I paid for petrol at the service station next to the Middle Wallop Army Air Corps Base in Hampshire:
